The Virginia Tech men’s basketball program has picked up a 7-foot center from Germany.
The agents for Antonio Dorn told ESPN on Saturday that Dorn has committed to Virginia Tech.
The 7-foot, 233-pound Dorn will turn 22 years old next month.
Dorn spent the past two seasons with the Kirchheim Knights in Germany’s Pro-A, the second-rung league of German pro basketball.
He averaged 9.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 18.3 minutes in 30 games in the 2024-25 season. He scored in double figures 15 times, including a 24-point outing. He had 16 points and 15 rebounds in one game.
Before moving up to Pro-A, he spent three seasons playing in Pro-B, the third-tier league of German pro basketball.
He played in four games in the 2023 FIBA Under-20 European Championships, averaging 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds.
Dorn played in six games in the EuroCup tournament in the 2022-23 season, scoring 12 points in one of those games.
Virginia Tech had a 7-footer on the roster the past three seasons, Patrick Wessler, but he plans to transfer to UNC Wilmington.
Dorn will be the first European player to join the Hokies directly from Europe without an in-between stint at an American high school, prep school or college since German import Malik Mueller played for Buzz Williams’ Hokies in the 2013-14 season.
Dorn will also be the first German to play for Tech since Mueller.
The addition of Dorn gives the Hokies nine scholarship players for next season’s roster, including Tobi Lawal, who has entered the NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility. If Lawal returns to college basketball, he intends to remain with the Hokies.
Lawal is one of four returning scholarship players, along with Tyler Johnson, Ben Hammond and Jaden Schutt.
Virginia Tech coach Mike Young has added two players from the transfer portal this month — former West Virginia forward Amani Hansberry and former Delaware point guard Izaiah Pasha.
Young signed two high school recruits last fall — Christian Gurdak and Sin’Cere Jones.
