The Virginia Tech men’s basketball program has picked up its first transfer of the spring.
Former West Virginia forward Amani Hansberry announced Saturday on Twitter that he has committed to the Hokies.
The Maryland native is following former WVU associate head coach Chester Frazier to Blacksburg. Tech announced Tuesday it had hired Frazier as its associate head coach.
Hansberry tweeted on March 25 that he was entering the transfer portal. Darian DeVries had stepped down as WVU’s head coach on March 18 to steer Indiana.
This is the second time Hansberry is following Frazier. Hansberry played for Illinois as a freshman in the 2023-24 season, when Frazier was in his third year on the Illini staff.
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Hansberry played in 31 games as a WVU sophomore this season, starting 24. He averaged 9.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 23.6 minutes.
He had 18 points and 10 rebounds against Central Florida. He had 14 points and 11 rebounds at Texas Tech. He had 13 points and 10 rebounds against Arizona. He had 17 points and 13 rebounds against Cincinnati. He also scored 17 points against Utah. He scored 19 points against both Louisville and Gonzaga. He had 16 points against Houston. He tallied 12 points against Iowa State.
Hansberry played in 19 games as an Illinois freshman reserve. He averaged 2.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 7.5 minutes for a team that made the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.
He averaged 15.3 points and 12 rebounds as a senior at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, earning 2023 Gatorade player of the year honors for the state of Maryland. He was named the Baltimore Sun’s Metro player of the year for the second straight year. He also was named the Baltimore Catholic League player of the year for the second straight year.
Hansberry becomes the seventh player on Virginia Tech’s 2025-26 roster.
There are just four returning scholarship players on next season’s roster — Tobi Lawal, Tyler Johnson, Ben Hammond and Jaden Schutt.
Tech signed two high school recruits last fall — Christian Gurdak and Sin’Cere Jones.
Six Hokies have entered the transfer portal, while Mylyjael Poteat and Ben Burnham are out of eligibility.
