Another Virginia Tech men’s basketball player is looking for a new school.
Little-used reserve forward Connor Serven has entered the portal, Virginia Tech confirmed Wednesday. The Portal Updates account had tweeted the news earlier Wednesday.
Serven played a total of 41 minutes in 16 games this season. He scored a total of four points.
This was the Eastern Michigan graduate transfer’s first season with the Hokies and his fifth year of college. He spent his first three college seasons as a preferred walk-on at Illinois before joining Eastern Michigan as a scholarship player. He also was on scholarship at Virginia Tech.
After playing in five games for Illinois in the 2022-23 season, he missed the rest of that season because of foot and hip injuries. A medical redshirt for that season would give him one more season of eligibility.
Five Hokies had previously entered the portal — Jaydon Young, Brandon Rechsteiner, Patrick Wessler, Rodney Brown Jr. and Ryan Jones Jr. Young committed to High Point.
Roster turnover was expected for the Hokes, who went just 13-19 this season. Hokies coach Mike Young has vowed to improve the roster.
Virginia Tech was already going to be without starting center Mylyjael Poteat and backup forward Ben Burnham next season because they are out of eligibility.
With six players intending to transfer, that leaves just four returning scholarship players penciled in on next season’s roster — Tobi Lawal, Tyler Johnson, Ben Hammond and Jaden Schutt.
Tech signed two high school recruits last fall — Christian Gurdak and Sin’Cere Jones.
Virginia Tech has seven available scholarships to pass out to spring recruits, including the one that Temple transfer Hysier Miller would have used if he had not been dismissed from the team last fall.
