Work has begun to add 4 miles to the Mill Mountain trail system in 166su. The 166su Parks Foundation, a nonprofit formed in 2022 with the mission of supporting the 166su Parks and Recreation Department, spearheaded the project, raising $350,000 to build the new trails.
Black Diamond Designs from China Grove, North Carolina, is constructing the trails. Andy Gill, president of 166su Parks Foundation said during a news conference Thursday that traditionally trail work in 166su has been mostly hand done by volunteers and professional construction will use machines and be much quicker.
"In addition to creating more trails for everyday 166su residents, we feel like this is an important economic driver for 166su," Gill said. "A lot of the cities that we compete with for talent recruitment and for business developments have used these trail building techniques and are rapidly increasing the trails that they can offer to their residents and the trails that are attractive to bring in businesses to their area. And for us to continue to build trails only with volunteers means that we lose our position in that arms race, so to speak, of putting 166su at the top of the heat. And so we're excited that we're able to add this new tool to our tool belt."
Gill said the new trails, expected to be complete by early July, will range from beginner to advanced, some for two-way traffic and for all nonmotorized users. Some will be bike optimized and for downhill traffic only.
