FERRUM — On Saturday, Ferrum College senior Breanna Weaver will be experiencing a first. She will be walking the stage to accept her diploma, something she and many other seniors were unable to do when graduating high school.
Graduating from Franklin County High School four years ago during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the many restrictions to public gatherings, Weaver made the best of a “drive-thru” ceremony. Now just days away from graduation, she is eager to experience the true experience.
“I’m so excited,” Weaver said of graduating while having friends and family watching from the audience.
While her first two years at Ferrum College had their challenges due to COVID-19 restrictions, Weaver has made the best of her time. She has been active in multiple campus organizations including a Ferrum Foundation mentor, Ferrum College Ambassador, the Student Athlete-Advisory Committee, Kappa Alpha Sigma’s historian and social media coordinator as well as serving as a residential assistant.

Weaver was included in Ferrum College’s President’s List for seven semesters. She was named to the All-Academic Old Dominion Athletic Conference Team from 2020-2023 and the All-Academic Team for the Virginia Sports Information Directors for 2022-2023. Additionally, she is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.
Weaver was also a member of the school’s cheerleading and softball teams. She was named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Conference second team for softball in 2022 and was able to reach 100 career hits in 2023.
When asked about her active college career involved with so many organizations and activities, Weaver said she wanted to experience as much as possible while at Ferrum College.
“I wanted to make the most out of my four years,” Weaver said.
Ferrum College recognized her for her achievements last month by awarding her the President’s Cup at the Spring 2024 Academic Awards. It is awarded annually to an individual who exhibits excellence in athletics, campus and community leadership, character and academics.
Athletics is a passion that Weaver plans to continue. She will be graduating with a degree in Business Administration with a emphasis in Sports Management and Marketing with minors in Coaching and Exercise Science.
Weaver hopes to one day work in the field of sports marketing, possibly for a professional team. While it has been seen in the past as a male dominated field, she wants to be part of a recent push to show women can participate as well.
Sports marketing is a passion Weaver found while at Ferrum College. She originally came to the school with the goal of becoming a physical education teacher until she began exploring other available options.
“I started looking into the marketing side of things,” Weaver said.
Following graduation, Weaver is planning to go to graduate school to continue her education. One of her first choices for schools to attend is to remain at Ferrum College to earn a masters in Athletic Coaching.
After enjoying four years at Ferrum College, Weaver said she is hoping to spend some more time at the school.
“I don’t want to leave yet,” Weaver said.
